In 1931, Dr. Fritz Pfleumer and AEG constructed the first magnetic tape recorder. The magnetic tape was used primarily for industrial and military applications. Philips, a consumer and healthcare technology company, invented the compact audiocassette in 1963 and introduced it for retail sale, sparking a demand for tape recorders for the home.
