History
The United States Marine Corps began in 1775 after an order by the Continental Congress stated that "two battalions of Marines be raised" for battles in the American Revolutionary War.
Origin
The Continental Marines disbanded following the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783. The USMC was reestablished in 1798 and fought in a number of conflicts with opposing nations and Caribbean pirates.
Significance
The United States Marine Corps has fought in every American conflict since the Revolutionary War.
Purpose
The USMC is part of the Department of the Navy. Its purpose is to conduct a wide spectrum of military operations, including air, land and sea combat.
Fun Fact
The Marine Corps nickname, Leatherheads, refers to the leather collars worn by Marines during the Revolutionary War.
