Both Lantus and Levemir are basal insulin formulas which mimic the constant, slow output produced by healthy pancreases and which last for a long time within the body. Lantus is made with glargine, a genetically-modified insulin produced by E. coli bacteria and then purified. Levemir is made with detemir, a modified insulin produced by baker's yeast.
