  • Everyone seems to be in the homicide craze, with shows such as "CSI," "Law & Order" and "Criminal Minds" dominating the airwaves. But what does it take to become an homicide detective, like you see on TV?

    Education

    To be a homicide detective you need to have an high school diploma. Also some departments require that you have one to two years of college coursework and in some cases they may require a college degree in criminal justice.

    Other Classes

    According to the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics, physical fitness courses help you get job as a homicide detective because they develop your stamina, agility and competitiveness--all vital skills needed for law enforcement.

    Police Academy

    Homicide detectives, like police officers, have to go through the police academy. You need to graduate from the police academy and then serve as a police officer before you can be a homicide detective.

    Other Requirements

    Most police stations require that you are in uniform for at least three years before getting promoted to any other department in the police station. During those three years you should let your superior know you are interested in pursing the position of a homicide detective. You will also need to take an written exam, and be at least 21 years old.

    Physical Exams

    To become an homicide detective you will also need to go through a physical exam, which tests your strength, vision, hearing and agility.
