A heart attack happens when the heart does not get enough oxygen because of an interruption in blood flow. Women account for about half of heart attack deaths, according to the Women's Heart Foundation, and often have different symptoms of the condition than men.
Types
Women sometimes have the same symptom of a heart attack as men, according to the Mayo Clinic. These include pain or discomfort in the chest, upper body and stomach; trouble breathing; anxiety; feeling lightheaded; sweating; nausea; and vomiting.
Unique Features
Women are much more likely to have a heart attack without chest pain as a symptom, although the Mayo Clinic reports that chest pain is still the most common symptom for a heart attack in women.
Flu-Like Symptoms
The Women's Heart Association reports that women may feel as though they have the flu for to two to four weeks before having a heart attack.
Other Symptoms
Other symptoms women may have during a heart attack include, according to the Mayo Clinic. discomfort in the neck, jaw, shoulder and upper back; dizziness; and feeling very tired.
Warning
A woman who believes she is having a heart attack should contact 911, chew an uncoated aspirin to reduce the effects of the heart attack and go to a center with 24-hour hear care, according to the Women's Heart Foundation.
