  • There are many different types of diseases that can affect the health of the heart. It is important to have regular medical check-ups to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system.

    Arrhythmia

    According the the American Heart Association, arrhythmias affect 2.2 million Americans. An arrythmia is an irregular heart beat. While some arrhthmias are not harmful to the heart, many that suffer from this condition are at risk for heart disease, stroke, or sudden death from a heart attack.

    Diabetes

    Diabetes is a condition in which the blood sugar in the body rises to dangerous levels. This can happen when the pancreas fails to produce an adequate amount of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps to regulate sugar in the body. Some forms of diabetes can be controlled with a healthy diet, but others may need daily medication to control the disease.Diabetes increases the risk of coronary artery disease, heart attack and stroke.

    Obesity

    Obesity is defined as having an excess amount of body fat. Obesity raises cholesterol, raises blood pressure and can put one at an increased risk of developing diabetes. It is important to maintain a healthy weight and eat a healthy diet to avoid obesity and it's heart related problems.

    Peripheral Artery Disease

    Peripheral artery disease or PAD, is commonly mistaken for other illnesses and can be detrimental to the cardiovascular system. The most common symptom of PAD is fatigue when walking up stairs or fatigue in the muscles of the leg. PAD puts those who suffer from it at a higher risk for heart attack and stroke, but can usually be managed with lifestyle changes and medication.

    Considerations

    These are a few of the disease that can adversely affect the cardiovascular system and may put you at an increased risk for a heart attack or stroke. It is important to consult your doctor if you have any of these symptoms, in order to obtain a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
