Statins are a group of cholesterol-lowering drugs known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. These drugs work by interrupting the production of cholesterol in the liver. These drugs include lovastatin (Mevacor), atorvastatin (Lipitor), simvastatin (Zocor) and rosuvastatin (Crestor).
