Age spots---more commonly known as liver spots---are dark spots that appear on areas of the skin that are frequently exposed to the sun. According to MayoClinic.com, an age spot is a harmless, skin blemish that can be treated and prevented.
Identification
Age spots are flat marks that are typically black or brown. They are most often found on the hands, face, back, chest and arms.
Prevention/Solution
Age spots are removed and treated using bleaching creams, chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing. According to DermaNetwork.org, the best treatment for age spots is prevention, by avoiding sun exposure and using sunscreen.
Significance
According to MayoClinic.com, age spots most commonly affect adults age 40 and above, however, they are also found in younger individuals.
Considerations
True age spots are benign; however, melanoma---a type of skin cancer---can mask as an age spot. Spots that change in size, color or shape should be examined by a physician.
Warning
One is more likely to experience age spots if he is fair-skinned or has a history of frequent sunburn.
