Most credit card companies, including American Express, offer a rewards program as an incentive for using their card services.
Function
The purpose of the American Express Membership Rewards program is to give card holders more reasons to use their credit card for purchases.
Benefits
American Express card holders can earn rewards points for nearly every purchase they make using their AmEx credit card. Typically it is one reward point earned for every eligible (depending on the card) dollar spent.
Extras
Travel purchases made on the American Express Travel site earned two rewards points for every dollar spent, as of January 2010. Additionally, purchases made with select American Express Rewards partners will earn you reward points two to 10 times the amount you spend.
Types
American Express Membership Rewards are available to card holders of the Basic Personal card, Gold CardSM, Platinum card, Centurion card and Business card.
Considerations
There is a $30 annual membership fee for Basic and Business card members to utilize the American Express Rewards program.
Redemption
You can redeem reward points in exchange for product certificates, car rentals, hotel stays, flier miles and other merchandise.
