• The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body. It reaches from a person's lower back down to his toes and allows for movement in the entire lower body.

    How Does Sciatica Develop?

Sciatica is often caused by remaining in prolonged positions, such as sitting or standing in place at work. It can also be caused by extreme strain which catalyzes the herniation of a spinal disc or inflammation of a muscle.

    Sciatica Symptoms

With sciatica you will experience numbness, tingling and sharp pain in either the lower back, legs or feet. Often times bringing a your knees to your chest will be extremely painful.

    Muscle Inflammation

A common cause of sciatica is muscle inflammation. Sciatica caused by muscle inflammation can be helped with massage, anti-inflammatory medicines, heat packs and ice packs.

    Herniated Discs

Another cause of sciatica is a herniated disc in the spine. If a disc slips out of place and puts excess pressure on the sciatic nerve, it can cause considerable discomfort.

In rare cases, a tumor will grow and put pressure on the sciatic nerve. It is critical that these cases be properly diagnosed and treated by a medical professional.
