  • There are many different degrees that you can get before you become a teacher. Oftentimes, it doesn't even have to be in the education field.

    The First Degree

The first degree you must get is a bachelor of arts or science from an accredited college or university.

    Further Degrees

Many states are requiring a master's degree to be held by the teacher, or the person must at least be in the process of acquiring one.

    Courses

Some of the courses you will take if you get a degree in education are teaching methods, educational psychology and student teaching. Even if you do not get an education degree, it can be helpful to take these classes as electives.

    Helpful Degrees

If you know going into college knowing that you want to be a teacher, there are some degrees that will be more helpful than others. An education or elementary education degree will help you learn about the specifics of teaching. If you want to teach math or science, a degree in those areas of study will come in handy.

    Teaching without a Teaching Degree

If the degree you receive is not a teaching degree, you may have to finish a teacher training course or program to receive credits. Once you have completed this course, you are certified to teach.
