The Organization of Teratology Information Services (OTIS), a body which gives the public information about risks during reproduction, says there have been no reports of women experiencing problems or changes during pregnancy which can be tied to hair dye, despite the fact that numerous women have had the procedure done while expecting.

On the Other: The Smell Might Get to You

If you think the chemicals and smells involved in hair coloring might bother you, don't get it done while pregnant. Even so-called natural hair dyes have some synthetic compounds in them, and if the prospect frightens you or makes you worried, it's better to avoid coloring your hair. Also, pregnant women may find the odors involved in hair dying to be unpleasant and they may cause nausea.

    Bottom Line

There is no evidence that the dyes and chemicals used in hair coloring cause problems in fetal development, and most of them do not soak into the skin at all. Even if there is little chance of the process causing harm to the unborn child, the fumes and potential worries may cause physical and psychological discomfort to the expecting mother.
