  • Multiple sclerosis, or MS, is an incurable autoimmune disease. Characterized by your own immune system's destruction of your nerve's protective myelin sheath, the damage can disrupt communication between your brain and body. Treatment aims to treat and minimize symptoms.

    Treatment Goals

Treatment strategies are designed to slow the course of the disease, manage symptoms, enhance functionality, improve safety, treat disease relapses and give patients the necessary emotional support.

    Common Treatments

Typical treatments for MS include corticosteroids (such as prednisone), interferons (such as interferon beta 1-b), glatiramer, physical therapy, occupational therapy and medical procedures such as plasmapheresis.

    Side Effects

Medication side effects vary in accordance with the medication you are taking. Common side effects include insomnia, weight gain, anxiety, increased perspiration, abdominal discomfort, headache and swelling.

    Last Resort Treatments

Natalizumab is usually reserved for patients who are unable to use other treatment types or do not see any results. Side effects include increased risk of multifocal leukoencephalopathy, a dangerous brain infection. Mitoxantrone may cause cardiac damage and is usually reserved for patients in advanced stages of the disease.

    Therapy

Physical, speech and/or occupational therapy are often used in conjunction with medications to strengthen your muscles and help you adapt to life with MS, making your daily tasks easier to perform.

    Alternative Medicine

Complementary and alternative medicine also plays a role in MS treatment. Alternative therapies such as yoga, relaxation techniques, hypnosis, herbal supplements, dietary changes, naturopathy and stress management may be helpful when used as part of an overall treatment plan.
