With the rapidly changing technology involved with sonography, ultrasound technicians are in high demand. These are highly trained medical professionals with knowledge of anatomy, technology and medical conditions. As the average ultrasound technician's salary can range anywhere from $50,000 to $60,000 per year, more and more people are looking toward a career in ultrasound technology.

Attend a Community College

Apply to a junior college and strive for a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. Quality medical programs are more and more competitive every day, some of them with a minimum GPA requirement of 3.8. In short, the higher your GPA when applying to the program, the better your chances are of being admitted to the program of your choice.

Apply to a Medical Sonography Program

Apply to an accredited medical sonography program. Not every program is accredited, and while that does not make your education completely useless, an accredited program ensures that you are eligible to take the required examination and be board certified.

Complete Clinical Training

Complete laboratory training. Your school will likely set you up with the clinical and laboratory training program that you need to get required experience. Training to be an ultrasound technician is a cross between clinical experience and classroom experience, and laboratory training is a critical part of the required education.

Become Registered

After graduation you are eligible to take the registry examination. There is no specific requirement that ultrasound technicians be registered, but those who do enjoy greater benefits including more favor on job applications and higher salaries.
