<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Flat Irons are Effective Hair Straighteners
If you have curly, frizzy or wavy hair, chances are you have tried a flat iron at least once. Flat irons can smooth even the most wild hair, helping you achieve a temporary straight-haired look. In addition, curly hair appears longer once it has been straightened.
On the Other: Flat Irons Damage Hair
According to Kate Welsh, a hair stylist with 17 years of experience, flat irons can damage your hair, as can all thermal products. For maximum effectiveness, flat irons are used at a high temperature. According to Welsh, "If the tool is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your hair." High temperatures can result in damaged, burned hair. Damaged hair is dry and breaks easily.
Bottom Line
Whenever possible, use your flat iron on the lowest possible setting, to avoid burning your hair. In addition, Kate Welsh recommends a thermal protection product such as a heat spray to help reduce damage to your hair from using thermal tools such as flat irons.
