Spider veins are a less severe type of varicose veins that can be caused by heredity, injury or hormones, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology (AOCD). Treatments are available to help reduce the appearance of spider veins.
Identification
Treatment for spider veins is probably necessary only if they cause pain or irritation or if they affect appearance, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Sclerotherapy
A solution of saline is injected into veins, causing them to collapse and scar and reduce in appearance in sclerotherapy, according to the AOCD.
Features
Sclerotherapy is considered the best option for spider veins, according to the AOCD. It is generally effective, though it does require a number of individual treatments, according to the AOCD and the Mayo Clinic.
Laser Therapy
Another option in the treatment of spider veins is using lasers to lighten the appearance of the veins, although the Mayo Clinic reports that this is generally less effective and carries more risks.
Considerations
Spider veins go away slowly over time following treatment, although they can come back in the same place, according to the Mayo Clinic.
