Definition

Osteoarthritis, a form of arthritis commonly affecting elderly dogs, is caused by the ''wear and tear'' effects on the cartilage in the dog's joints. This degeneration gradually eats away the joint fluid which provides cushioning and therefore protection.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin

Used in combination, these two products make one of the safest and best supplements often prescribed to dogs suffering from osteoarthritis. Both are natural. Glucosamine derives from the shells of crustaceans and chondroitin derives from animal cartilage.

NSAIDS

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are pain relievers obtained by prescription and should be given strictly under a veterinarian's advice. The most commonly prescribed NSAIDs for dogs suffering from osteoarthritis are aspirin, Deramaxx, Rimadyl, Previcox, Etogesic and Metacam.

Adequan

Adequan is an injectable treatment belonging to a class of drugs known as Disease-Modifying Osteoarthritis Drugs (DMOAD). It works by stimulating the cartilage to repair itself while diminishing the level of damage and therefore reducing pain.

Acupuncture

For dog owners seeking alternative treatments, some dogs may benefit from acupuncture. The insertion of fine needles encourages the release of endorphins which help control pain and encourage blood vessels to dilate.

Diet and Exercise

Overweight dogs suffering from osteoarthritis benefit from a diet, since excess pounds tend to add strain on joints. Moderate exercise may be recommended but exercise should not be excessive.
