A chip is a small area of a painted surface that has flaked off of the undercoating and primer. The colors of vehicle paint less likely to have noticeable chips will be based on the color of the primer coat. According to several on-line retailers, the most popular color of primer is light grey. With that being the case, the colors that will have the least noticeable chips will be light gray to charcoal.

On the Other: Specialty Colors and Body Repairs

In some circumstances a primer color other than grey may have been used. That may be the case in unique or bright finish colors, or when a body shop color matches your vehicle after a body repair. Because of those variables, the visibility of chips will vary greatly depending on the original paint job.

    Bottom Line

It is impossible to say with certainty which colors are less likely to show chipping due to the many variables. In general however, shades of gray are a good choice.
