The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned that drowning is the second leading cause of death for children under five. It recommends taking multiple steps for pool safety, which may include both a fence and mesh safety cover for your in-ground pool.
Strength
A mesh safety cover prevents anyone from accidentally falling into your in-ground pool. Therefore, unlike solar covers or winter debris covers, the safety cover can hold over 400 pounds.
Mesh Versus Solid
Mesh will allow rain and melting snowfall to go through the cover rather than accumulating in puddles, which could pose a danger to toddlers. However, some dirt may also get through the mesh.
Shape
Mesh safety covers are available in standard rectangular sizes or can be ordered in custom shapes and sizes for irregular pools, though this costs more.
Installation
Safety covers require stakes or anchors installed in the ground at least 20 inches from the edge of the pool around its perimeter.
Automatic or Manual
Automatic mesh safety covers use a motor to pull the cover over the pool or remove it. This makes using the cover much easier but is, of course, significantly more expensive.
