Roof vents will extend the life of the roof by minimizing the temperature differential between the attic and the outside air. Roof vents will also prevent problems due to heat buildup, humidity and moisture. Problems resulting from inadequate ventilation can extend to items stored in the attic as well.
On the Other: Serious Damage May Take Several Years
Without proper ventilation roof damage will inevitably occur, however it my take several years for serious damage to appear. It may not be necessary to deal with the situation immediately and the damage may not be as serious as expected to either the roof or items stored in the attic.
Bottom Line
By waiting you risk damage to the roof, the attic, the contents of the attic and water damage inside your house. Heat buildup, humidity and moisture can cause serious damage. Also, the moisture can cause mold and fungi to grow causing odor and health problems.
