The Federal Bureau of Investigation maintains the National Crime Information Center. The database of criminal justice information includes criminal history, missing persons and fugitives. Some jobs or schools require their applicants to provide a background check. The information included in the database is the date of any arrests and the criminal charges leveled. The criminal charges in the database include sex offenses, property crimes and drug offenses. Other felonies and misdemeanors are included; minor misdemeanors are not. When someone is arrested, his fingerprints are sent to the National Crime Information Center. During a background check, the prints are put through a database to determine prior arrests. The FBI is authorized to provide background checks to some employers, such as government agencies or employers that require employees to work with children. The FBI may provide a background check for other reasons, such as for internal adoption agencies or local law enforcement agencies. Individuals may also request their own background checks.
