Legends about the effects of the moon on humans have persisted for centuries, from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to numerous werewolf myths. People commonly believe that the full moon is responsible for strange behavior, and this belief is at the root of the words "lunacy" and "lunatic."

On the Other: Studies Do Not Support the Lunar Effect

Despite popular opinion, scientific research has not held up the concept of a lunar effect on behavior. Numerous studies have been conducted on violence, depression, suicide, emergency room visits, drug overdose and accidents, and the vast majority have shown no relation to the phase of the moon.

    Bottom Line

Werewolves and mythical madmen notwithstanding, there is little evidence to support the moon's effect on human moods and behavior. If you run across someone acting strange during a full moon, odds are they're probably just strange.
