Insulation is the primary purpose of hair, which is made up of a protein called keratin, a natural insulator. In many mammals, hair is densely packed and traps pockets of air close to the skin to provide warmth. Humans are no longer covered with dense hair, so they are no longer afforded its warming benefits.
