  • The sciatic nerve runs from the pelvic area through the buttocks and down to the foot. It's the longest nerve in the body and helps make movement and feeling possible in the thigh, knee, foot and ankle.

    Sciatica

Sciatica is a common and painful condition caused by damage to or irritation of the sciatic nerve.

    Causes

Sciatica is often caused by pressure on the nerve roots. The source of sciatic pain can sometimes be determined by its starting point. If it starts in the lower back, it could be due to a herniated disc, but if it starts in the buttocks, it might be caused by piriformis syndrome. Pregnant women may experience sciatic pain due to pressure the growing baby places on the nerve. Other causes include spinal stenosis and trauma.

    Pregnancy

Pregnant women may experience sciatic nerve pain due to pressure the baby places on the nerve as it grows.

    Risk Factors

You may be at a higher risk for sciatica if you are older than 30, pregnant, perform a job that requires heavy lifting or twisting your back, sit for long periods of time or have diabetes.

    Complications

Sciatica is usually treatable with over-the-counter drugs, stretching and hot or cold packs, but severe nerve damage can result in loss of feeling or movement in the leg. Loss of bowel function is makes it a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment, often surgery.
