  • Neural foraminal stenosis is a disorder affecting your spine. This disorder involves either your lumbar or cervical spine. If you suffer from neural foraminal stenosis, you'll feel weakness, pain, numbness or tingling in your lower back or neck.

    Identification

Your foramen is located in the spaces between your vertebrae. Within these spaces your spinal nerve roots enters and exit before traveling to other areas of your body.

    Effects

When this area of your spine becomes narrowed or compressed it is known as stenosis.

    Causes

Once your foramen narrows, due to disc degeneration, advanced age or arthritis, your neck or lower back is affected.

    Significance

Neural foraminal stenosis typically causes pain on one side of your body. Also, the tingling, numbness or pain becomes gradually worse over time.

    Treatment

According to Spine Health, nonsurgical treatment or monitoring is the first course of treatment. If your symptoms do not improve, however, surgery may be an option.
