  • A Zone 1 designation in a bathroom helps electricians determine what type of lighting they can safely install in that area. The specifications are based on ingress protection (IP) ratings, which describe the safety of a lighting product in various environments.

    Zones

Bathrooms are divided into four zones for lighting-safety purposes: zones 0, 1, 2 and 3.

    Safety

The zones determine what types of lighting can be present, based on the danger of electric shock in that area.

    IP Rating

IP ratings, developed by the European Committee for Electro Technical Standardization, consists of a numbered code that describes against which dangers the product protects. The first number describes how well the product protects against solid objects penetrating the system. The second number describes how well the product protects against liquids. In bathroom products, the second number is the most important.

    Zone 1

Zone 1 refers to the area up to 7.38 feet (2.25 meters) above the bath or shower. Zone 1 lighting must have an IP rating of X4. The X means that the lighting does not have to provide protection against solid objects and materials, such as dust. The 4 specifies that the lighting must be protected from water spraying in all directions.

    Other Zones

Zone 0 is the area inside the bath or shower, Zone 2 is the area surrounding Zone 1 and the sink, and Zone 3 is the rest of the bathroom.
