  • Bone marrow disease affects the stem cells in your marrow. These stem cells, or immature cells, are used to develop the red and white blood cells that help our bodies carry out their functions. Diseases of the bone marrow prevent these stem cells from developing properly.

    Leukemia

Leukemia is the cancer of the bone marrow that begins in the white blood cells. People with leukemia produce an excess of white blood cells that do not function correctly, causing the marrow to function improperly.

    Aplastic Anemia

Another disease that affects the marrow is aplastic anemia, in which the body ceases its production of red blood cells.

    Lymphoma

Another cancer that affects the bone marrow is lymphoma. This cancer also develops in the white blood cells, which then can spread into the bone marrow.

    Environmental Factors

Many environmental factors can cause bone marrow disease. Exposure to radiation or toxic chemicals, certain medications or some viral infections can all cause bone marrow disease.

    Genetic Factor

Some autoimmune diseases like lupus can can involve the bone marrow. According to the Mayo Clinic, some people are genetically predisposed to bone marrow disease and the cause is not evident.
