The first gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle was built by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche in 1901 (System Mixt). However, the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle was not introduced until 1997, when the Toyota Prius debuted in Japan. Honda's Insight was the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle sold in America, introduced in 1999.
