Business class air travel refers to a category of airfare that provides passengers with more room and premium amenities. It is more expensive than economy but less expensive than first class.
History
The Australian airline Qantas offered the first business-class seats in 1979 as a less expensive alternative to first class for company travel.
Availability
Long-haul flights on most major airlines will offer business class as well as first class and economy. On short-haul flights, many airlines offer either first or business class, but not both.
Amenities
Business class offers numerous amenities to make the trip more comfortable. Seats are bigger and can recline more. There is more leg room than in economy. A bulkhead or curtain separates business from economy. Meals are more ample and alcoholic drinks are free.
Corporate policies
Companies may authorize business-class travel for senior executives as a perk, or they may permit business class for long-haul flights so that employees arrive more rested and better able to work.
Business only
A few smaller airlines have tried to run business-class-only flights, but some of them went bankrupt when the 2008 recession hit, so it's uncertain whether this is a viable business model.
