According to ROHL, a maker of fireclay sinks for over 100 years, fireclay sinks have been popular since the late 1800s, primarily for their durability. Artisans fashion the sinks out of glazed clay, which they then fire at over 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit. The high temperature fuses the clay and the glaze together, creating an impermeable, impact-resistant surface. ROHL claims that the durability of fireclay sinks made them a practical choice in American and British kitchens.
On the Other: Stainless Steel is Tougher
Bath & Kitchen Studio, an online resource for bath and kitchen products, suggests that stainless steel is tougher than fireclay, as it is more impact-resistant and will never crack with age. Cooks can also place a hot pot in direct contact with a stainless steel sink and not worry about marks or stains.
Bottom Line
Firing processes that feature intense heat make fireclay sinks resistant to scratches, chips, fading and rust. Fireclay sinks are extremely durable.
