The federal government tests all passenger cars and trucks released each year to determine how they might hold up in a crash. According to tests of 2009 models, the Nissan 350Z roadster is the safest convertible car available, especially for the driver.
What is Tested
Crash tests gauge the safety of the driver and front-seat passenger in a frontal impact, the front and rear row of the passenger compartment for a side impact and all occupants during a rollover.
Where the 350Z Roadster Excelled
The safest convertible car released in 2009, the 350Z roadster, received the government's highest rating, five stars, in protecting the driver in a head-on collision. It also protected both occupants well in side-impact tests.
Where It Fell Short
The 350Z also got top marks among convertible cars for rollover accidents, but it received four out of five stars for passenger safety in head-on collisions.
Other Safe Convertibles
The Pontiac Solstice and the Saturn Sky roadsters share the same platform, and both got a rating of four in head-on and side-impact tests and a five-star rating on rollovers.
Lower Rated
The Volkswagen New Beetle convertible received four out of five stars in all crash tests.
