According to the Saunders Comprehensive Veterinary Dictionary, pseudomyxoma refers to a mass of cells in the abdomen that form tumors and secrete mucus. The tumors are cancerous, but do not normally spread beyond the abdominal cavity.
Appendicitis
Pseudomyxoma peritonei is the condition that results from your appendix bursting and the cancerous cells spreading into your abdominal cavity.
Ovarian Cysts
Pseudomyxoma peritonei may result from a cyst on one or both ovaries rupturing and the tumor cells spreading to the abdominal cavity.
Pancreas
Pseudomyxoma peritonei may also be caused by tumor cells spreading from the pancreas.
Spread of Tumor Cells
Once the tumor cells have entered the abdominal cavity, they may spread throughout your abdomen. These cells do not usually spread throughout the body as normal cancer cells do, but concentrate their location to the lower abdomen.
Mucus-Producing Tumor Cells
The cells associated with pseudomyxoma produce mucus, if not treated, can produce enough mucus to interfere with the normal function of the organs in the abdominal cavity and eventually lead to death.
