AARP Essential Health Insurance was one type of coverage available through the organization and underwritten by United Health Group. As of May 2009, this coverage is no longer available. AARP still offers the Essential Premier Health Insurance policies for individuals between 50 and 64 years of age.
What is the AARP?
AARP stands for American Association of Retired Persons. The organization was formed in 1958, and membership is open to anyone over the age of 50, whether they are retired or not.
Essential Premier Health Insurance
The Essential Premier Health Insurance policies provide more substantial benefits than did the other, now-defunct policy choices. Multiple policy options are available. All of these options are classified as Preferred Provider Organizations and are compatible with Health Savings Accounts.
Deductibles
The deductibles for the available AARP Essential Premier Health Insurance plans range from $1,500 to $5,000 for individuals choosing in-network providers. The prescription drug deductible ranges from $250 to $500 per year for individuals.
Preventative Care
All three plans emphasize preventive care. Routine yearly examinations require only a co-payment of $25 to $40, depending on the plan and the state where you live. The deductible is waived and up to $200 will be paid towards the exam.
Hospitalization Coverage
If you are hospitalized, the policies will pay between 70% and 80% of the costs after you meet your deductible, depending on the state where you live and the specific policy you choose. If you are admitted to the hospital after visiting the emergency room, the $100 to $150 co-payment required will be waived.
