  • There are several different types of migraines. While headaches are the most common type of migraine, some can occur in the abdomen as well. Most types of migraines include pain, but some do not.

    Headache-type Migraines

Headache pain is often associated with migraines. Headache-type migraines are commonly divided into those with an aura, a halo of light that surrounds objects, and those without. Migraine headaches without aura are the most common.

    Abdominal Migraines

Abdominal migraines often appear in children whose parents suffer from migraines. Abdominal migraines are characterized by intense pain on one side of the abdomen, nausea, vomiting and pallor.

    Basilar-type Migraine

Basilar-type migraines--previously known as Basilar-Artery Migraines--are aura-type headaches that affect both hemispheres of the brain, but they do not include motor weakness. The National Migraine Association says the symptoms of this type of headache can mimic other, more serious illnesses.

    Headache-Free Migraines

Strangely, migraines can occur without headache pain. Often the only symptom is an aura, and this symptom usually occurs in migraine sufferers who have a history of aura-type migraines.

    Rare Migraines

A status migraine is a rare form of the condition that lasts for several days. In some cases, hospitalization may be necessary.
