<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: They are Not Safe
Vent free fireplaces produce enough pollutants to make people in the building sick, according to ChimneySweepOnline.com. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, California, Montana, Wisconsin and New York City banned them. Many other jurisdictions in other states have also banned them.
On the Other: Easy to Install
People put vent free fireplaces in their homes because they are easy to install and are cheaper since no chimney is required. You must have a window open when using a vent free fireplace. To limit exposure to the poisonous gas they emit, manufacturers will tune them to burn the lowest possible emissions, according to ChimneySweepOnline.com.
Bottom Line
Not only do vent free fireplaces coat your home with black carbon deposits, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency does not support the use of non-vented fireplaces because of indoor air quality concerns.
