According to an FAQ document by the Breakthrough Technologies Institute, hydrogen power is not only a renewable source of power, but it generates electricity without producing pollutants. A Popular Mechanics article about hydrogen claims that pound for pound, hydrogen produces three times as much energy as natural gas; its only byproduct is water.
On the Other: Its production creates carbon dioxide
Popular Mechanics points out an important fact about hydrogen power: The U.S. produces hydrogen by applying high temperature and pressure to natural gas. Carbon dioxide is one of the main byproducts of this reaction, and hydrogen manufacturers release it into the atmosphere.
Bottom Line
Although hydrogen power itself does not pollute, the production process to create hydrogen for fuel or energy creates greenhouse gases and pollutes the air.
