Most box fans or floor fans use approximately 100 watts, which adds up to 74 kilowatt hours per month if they're left running around the clock. A medium-sized window air conditioner, meanwhile, uses 900 watts, or 670 kilowatt hours if left on for a month straight. If you're paying $0.10 per kWh for electricity, the cost of running the window unit for the month would be about $67, as opposed to $7.40 for the box fan.

On the Other: Ceiling Fans Are More Efficient

A 36-inch ceiling fan uses about 55 watts when running on high. If left on for a month, the ceiling fan would account for roughly 41 kWh, or $4.10 at the rate previously quoted. Therefore, the ceiling fan offers noticeable savings over the box fan in the long run.

    Bottom Line

While it's not quite as efficient as a ceiling fan, a box fan consumes far less electricity than central air conditioning or a window unit. If it provides enough cooling for you, using a box fan instead of air conditioning is a huge energy-saver and will save you a considerable amount of money, comparatively, fairly quickly.
