  • <h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: You Can Use Kerosene or Diesel in Your Furnace

Both kerosene and diesel fuel can be used in a household furnace. Kerosene is less viscous than #2 heating fuel and therefore flows well in extremely cold weather. In Vermont, kerosene is used instead of #2 heating fuel when a supply tank is outside a house or trailer. Diesel fuel is slightly more viscous than #2 heating fuel, but will burn well in an emergency.

On the Other: There Are Problems

Kerosene is more expensive than #2 heating fuel and burns somewhat faster. Diesel fuel will burn at almost the same rate as #2 fuel but is thicker and therefore can clog up, especially in very cold weather.

    Bottom Line

Number 2 fuel is specially refined for use in home furnaces. If you run out of this fuel and either diesel fuel or kerosene are available, they are viable substitutes. However, be ready to pay more for kerosene and be ready for flow and supply problems with diesel.
