There are numerous stories in the news of perfume being used as improvised mace, including one listed at Caller.com about a woman who fought off a knife-wielding attacker using a bottle of Elizabeth Arden.
Perfume may burn, but it lacks the aerosol range of mace (which can be up to 25 feet with a spray gun), the inflammatory effects and the incapacitation time (up to 45 minutes for some mace). Mace is also meant as a weapon, so its deployment method is engineered to give maximum spray.
Perfume may do in a pinch, but it's not a good idea to carry around a spray bottle of Estee Lauder in your jacket pocket and to think you're safe. If you want real protection, get real mace.
