  • Ionized water may be the key to fighting toxins in foods and the environment that damage human body cells. Dr. Hidemitsu Hayashi, Director of the Water Institute of Japan, maintains that using electrolysis to ionize water restores the healthy balance of oxygen and prevents acid buildup.

    Description

Ionization is the production of negatively or positively charged atoms and molecules as a result of the loss or gain of protons or electrons.

    Process

Commercial ionizers attach to the faucet and create a mild electrical current that charges positive water molecules as they pass through the electrode chamber. The molecules gain a surplus of electrons, producing a non-acidic alkaline water.

    Theories

Alkaline water helps to preserve a normal body pH by neutralizing acidic substances and donating electrons to oxygen molecules with unpaired electrons. Otherwise, these molecules could attach to healthy cells and cause serious damage.

    Benefits

Advocates of ionization believe that alkaline water works as an antioxidant that can fight diseases like cancer and slow the process of aging. Alkaline water is also considered to be easier for the body to absorb.

    Debates

According to retired chemistry professor Stephen Lower, the conductivity of pure water is too low to sufficiently support the process of electrolysis. Lower also points out that an alkaline substance would be neutralized by the body's natural acids.
