<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Regular is the Recommended Fuel Type
FuelEconomy.gov indicates that the 2002 Ford Windstar engine was built to run on regular gasoline, which is defined as 87 octane. It is, however, able to run on gasoline graded higher than 87 octane.
On the Other: Premium Might Be a Consideration
Premium gasoline (graded at 91 octane or higher) actually has a higher energy content than regular gasoline. While the 2002 Windstar fuel type recommended by Ford is regular, premium fuel might deliver slightly improved gas mileage over the long haul.
Bottom Line
Any improvement in fuel economy experienced by using premium gas would be slight at best--and it's not a guarantee the boost would be noticeable in daily driving. Ford recommends regular gasoline for the 2002 Windstar, and this is likely to be the most economical choice for owners.
