Security cameras, real or fake, will deter petty thieves and those seeking an easy opportunity to get something for nothing. These cameras make the thieves believe they'll be seen and caught, so they move on.
On the Other: They Don't Deter Serious Criminals
Real, career criminals won't be deterred by a security camera. Thieves who plan and case businesses or homes will take precautions to avoid or frustrate security to get what they want.
Bottom Line
Security cameras will deter all but the more serious criminals. And even if they don't deter crime, the cameras will catch the crimes on tape, thus providing possible leads to the police after the crime has been committed.
