  • Lung cancer is the leading cause of deaths from cancer in the U.S. There are very few symptoms in the early stage of this disease. Early detection is critical for improving survival rates.

    Significance

According to the National Lung Cancer Partnership, more than 160,000 people die of lung cancer in the United States annually. Only about 16 percent of people with lung cancer are diagnosed before the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.

    Goal of Screening

The goal of screening for lung cancer is to detect the cancer at an early stage where there are few or no symptoms. Treatment at an early stage can lead to more treatment options and a higher survival rate.

    Considerations

According to the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program, annual CT scans of high risk individuals can detect cancer at a stage where as many as 92% of cases can be cured.

    Risk Factors

People at high risk for lung cancer include people who are over 60 and smoke or have a history of smoking, and people who have COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) or have previous lung tumors.

    Prevention/Solution

If you are concerned about your risk of lung cancer, talk to your doctor. He can help you determine whether screening tests are right for you.
