Each state in the United States has a different set of credential requirements for the massage therapy profession. Illinois state and town or city regulations must be met and proper licensing acquired to legally work as a massage therapist.
Illinois State Requirements
According to the Illinois Division of Professional Regulation (IDPR), a massage therapist must submit an application to the IDPR after successful completion of a 500-hour course in a state-approved school. All massage therapist applicants must submit to a criminal background check and fingerprint processing.
Local Requirements
Each town and city has a unique set of massage-therapy ordinances and requirements. Check with your locality to determine requisite laws.
Fees
Fees for massage therapy licensing include all tuition expenses as well as state-licensing fees. As of 2009, the Illinois massage therapy license fee was $175.
Alternative Licensing Methods
In Illinois, a person may meet the requirements for massage therapist if she has moved to Illinois from a state that has the same or higher regulations. Documentation must be submitted for verification purposes.
Exemptions
People who do not need to meet these licensing standards in Illinois include doctors and physical therapists.
Renewals
The state of Illinois renews massage therapy licenses in December every other year. As of 2009, the fee is $175. To renew, 24 hours of approved continuing education is required, with a minimum of two hours of ethics education and not more than 12 hours of online education. (reference 1 and 2)
