All manufacturers of handheld mixers proudly list the wattage for their product. For years, 250 watts and under was the standard for mixers, but recently manufacturers have started marketing products with much higher wattage, inferring the mixers have more power as a result.

On the Other: Wattage Represents Input, Not Output

It is important to remember that the wattage that manufacturers list represents the amount of energy traveling from the outlet to the mixer---not from the mixer to the bowl. Cooking for Engineers, a website explaining the science behind cooking equipment, tested mixers and found no correlation between input wattage and power.

    Bottom Line

In spite of marketing attempts by the manufacturers to suggest otherwise, wattage does not equal power for handheld mixers---or any kind of mixer, for that matter.
