Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that affects about 125 million people worldwide, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation. It a chronic condition with periods of remission and periods of exacerbation. Some cases are more severe than others. For some people, psoriasis is nearly an annoyance, while for others it causes severe discomfort. There are several types of psoriasis, all of which have slightly different symptoms.
Plaque Psoriasis
Plaque psoriasis is the most common type of psoriasis. Symptoms include red scaly lesions which can appear anywhere on the body. The lesions may be painful and generally itch.
Pustular Psoriasis
Pustular psoriasis causes pus-filled blisters. Fever and chills often accompany outbreaks of pustular psoriasis.
Erythrodermic Psoriasis
Erythrodermic psoriasis is the least common type of psoriasis. Symptoms of erythrodermic psoriasis include red, peeling skin accompanied by an itching or burning sensation.
Psoriatic Arthritis
Psoriatic arthritis causes painful, swollen joints in addition to skin lesions. In severe cases, it can lead to permanent deformity.
Preventing Symptoms of Psoriasis
Many factors can exacerbate symptoms of psoriasis. To minimize symptoms, patients are advised to reduce stress, limit exposure to the cold and avoid smoking and drinking alcohol. Certain medications can also exacerbate symptoms.
