  • James T. Russell, a physicist and inventor, developed the first compact disc in the late 1960s. While working as senior scientist at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory of the Batelle Memorial Institute, Russell invented the CD as a way to record and play music without the wear and tear of vinyl records. The compact disc was patented in 1970.
