Speaking effectively in public is a skill that comes naturally to some, while others can find it difficult and even frightening. Even the most confident speakers, however, must have a game plan in order to ensure their speaking is clear, engaging and meaningful.
Characteristics
Being energetic, varying one's speed and tone, and beginning with an interesting anecdote are all ways to grab the audience's attention.
Structure
When making a speech, think of the entire story being told and boil it down to two or three primary points that all other information is supporting. Use clear transitions, so it's obvious when and why gears are shifting.
Delivery
Build a connection with the audience by using humor (when appropriate) and maintaining eye contact. Speaking directly to individuals within the group often helps to ease the speaker's nerves.
Completion
The audience should walk away thinking. Sum up with a clever point or analogy that will stick with those in attendance.
Fun Fact
Winston Churchill, considered by many to be a great orator, had to memorize each of his speeches backward and forward to keep from stuttering.
