Biometrics is a technologically advanced method of ensuring that the right people gain access to materials or locations. With biometrics, people are able to carry their password or key with them, since the body functions as the password or key.
Identification
Biometrics is the use of the human body as a type of password. Certain physical characteristics of individuals are unique and technology can analyze these characteristics in order to identify individuals.
Categories
The two categories of biometrics are physiological and behavioral. Physiological biometrics scan unique bodily characteristics, such as the blood vessels in the eye or the shape of the individual's fingerprint, while behavioral biometrics looks at factors such as speech and movement.
Types
Biometrics can scan an individual's fingerprints, face, iris, DNA, voice and veins.
Function
Biometrics in security systems ensure that individuals do not have access to places, objects or data unless they have the right physiological or behavioral characteristics.
Warning
Biometrics for security systems has not been implemented very often due to both cost and accuracy issues.
