Exogenous depression is a depressive state that is brought on by external factors. The word exogenous means "from without"; exogenous depression is defined as a reactive depression that originates from outside the individual.
Causes of Exogenous Depression
Exogenous depression can be caused by a variety of environmental, social or traumatic factors. These factors could include the death of a loved one, loss of employment, divorce, or any other stressful life event.
Symptoms
The symptoms of exogenous depression can include insomnia, weight loss, apathy, loss of appetite, inexplicable agitation or anxiety, chronic fatigue, inability to concentrate and thoughts of suicide.
Duration
Exogenous depression is considered a short-term illness. Brought on by life circumstances, it often resolves itself as those circumstances improve. For example, exogenous depression brought on by the loss of a loved one can improve as the person works through the stages of grieving.
Treatment
Treatment for exogenous or "reactive depression" often involves several components, including but not limited to: talk therapy, use of support groups, health and lifestyle changes and prescription medication.
Take Action
Depression is a serious medical condition. Anyone showing symptoms of depression should consult a doctor.
